Not Getting Even 2 Mbps from Netflix

Hi all,

I have been on FiOS since buying this new home in May. I really only have FiOS and Comcast as broadband options here and I despise Comcast more than Verizon, so here I am. I have to say, 50 Mbps downloads are REALLY nice most of the time, and I am an IT geek, so I frequently monitor and check speeds.

I have an ActionTec MI424WR-GEN3I router. I have an HTPC connected to it via wired Ethernet. I can run any Internet speedtest and verify my 50/25 plan.

I use Windows Media Center and Chrome to use Netflix streaming. First all, the quality NEVER moves to HD automatically. If I use the ALT+SHIFT+CLICK to select a higher bitrate, the stream just can't keep up. I use a program called DU Meter to monitor real time bandwidth and it never downloads faster than 200 kB/s (or about 2 Mbps).

So, I am aware of the battles between Verizon and Cogent, and I can understand occasionally slow performance, but under 2 Mbps on a 50 Mbps plan? THAT is ridiculous.

Has anyone tried a VPN service like UnoTelly? Does it work?

Does anyone have any options to possibly remedy this? Don't mean to be rude, but I am not looking for responses like "cancel service".
